"It's a grab bag" is an expression used to describe every freshman team during the first week of the fall term. But at this university the phrase belongs--and always has belonged--to Coach Dana Getchell, and his bag of tricks is the freshman soccer hopefuls.

Getchell has been given good material, and the ability to whip a team into shape. He wants one more gift: 'morale" for his team. A booster bursting with high spirits is always a receptive pupil, and provides "fertile ground for teaching," as the soccer coach puts it.

Exeter Game on Oct. 9

Victory induces high spirits, and the first chance for victory will come when the freshman boosters will meet a fired-up Exeter team on October 9. Until then, we can only look into Getchell's grab bag.

Working at left wing are Tagh Sweeney, who was fielded in the same position on the Exonian team, and Bill Gallagher. On the right outside are Tom Blodgett, another former Exeter booter, Bob Forbush and Tim Zagot.

Dick McIntosh, who has played left inside, will probably remain at right, where he seems to be more at home. The two older McIntosh brothers, Cary, who played varsity soccer with Getchell, and Ken, who is on Munro's varsity this year, have been Crimson soccer stars.

The other freshman booters who have been playing inside are Hank Schneiwind, John Nottebahm, and Brian Bouton.

To finish his forward line, Getchell is looking for a center who feeds off well and makes the right moves at the right time. He has tried Al Vando and Alex Goren, who both also play left inside, John Chadwick and Gallagher. Vando has played soccer for three years at the New Lincoln School.

Halfback possibilities are Hank Zoob, Nick Mills, Bill King, Hal Louchheim, and Ted Wandel. Zoob is from Friends Central High School in Philadelphia, which Getchell calls "one of the hotbeds of soccer."

The fullback position is also up in the air. Tom Morgan, Bill Drider, Bill Abernathy, and George Faison are among the possibilities. Faison, who played at St. Paul's for three years, has been out with an injury for the past few days.

The goal is "pretty much anybody's position" this season, with Norman, Littel and Oxnard the main contenders.
