After the Deluge, Lacrosse

Despite its 70-degree temperatures, balmy yesterday just wasn't a baseball day. H.A.A. officials walked out on Soldiers Field in the morning and decided it was too wet to play Northeastern. The postponement, the second this season, gave Coach Shepard a chance to hold additional auditions for the third base spot, now held jointly by Matt Botsford and Stu Levine. The leading candidate this time was Tony Markella.

The Crimson sailing team, which held the National Championship in '52 and '53 and was runner-up to M.I.T. in '54, last weekend took its first step towards regaining the crown for this year. Top skippers Fred Hoppin and Ace Langworthy qualified for the New England Finals, which will be held on May 12. The two leading teams (out of about 12) in these races will represent New England at the Nationals in Detroit on June 12.

Harvard certainly has had losing teams before, but few fans will disagree that it will be hard to match the record of this season's lacrosse squad. The poor varsity has been crushed to pieces nine times already without a win and the freshman ten has been dropping games regularly to prep school teams (1-20 to Deerfield--2-16 to Exeter). Of course we can't blame anyone if there just aren't enough good players around, but the least the H.A.A. could do is to give the teams some decent equipment. At present the squads wear faded, patched, pink shirts and usually have to trade off helmets and gloves.
