Teachers colleges should continue to raise the standards of the teaching profession if they want to interest more college graduates in teaching, according to Dean Keppel, of the School of Education. Keppel is vice-chairman of the National Education Association's commission on teacher education and professional standards, which has just concluded a two-day session in Boston.
Keppel, speaking for the commission, stated, "Believe it or not, raising the standards for entrance into the profession increases the supply."
"The commission has been arguing this for the past six years," Keppel continued. "We are sure that number will follow quality. Today evidence is beginning to show that this policy of raising standards is paying off."
The NEA feels that the answer to the shortage of teachers lies in making the profession one which people would be proud to enter.
