Justice Hugo L. Black of the United States Supreme Court will preside over the final argument of the Ames Competition today in a closed session in Langdell Hall Courtroom.
Black will be Chief Justice of the fictitious appellate "Ames Court." Justice Edward A. Counihan, Jr. of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and Judge Ernest W. Gibson of the Federal District Court of Vermont will be Associate Justices.
The judges will base their decision solely on the relative performances of the competing law clubs, and not on any point of law. The competing clubs are the Cardozo Club and the Powell Club, each with eight students.
Almost ninety percent of first year law students enter the Ames Competition, but by the spring of the third year all have have been eliminated except the two clubs competing in the finals.
The cases in the court are written by the Law School faculty, and the courts assemble state appellate courts as closely as possible.
