Representatives from seven Ivy League colleges voted to inaugurate an Ivy League Debate Conference in a meeting here yesterday afternoon.
Having taken the lead in organizing the Conference and in calling yesterday's meeting, the Debate Council will be in charge of the league's first season of operations next year and will supervise a series of home and home debates among the member colleges to determine the Conference champion.
Of the Ivy League colleges, only Yale has declined to join the Conference, while Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, and Princeton will take part in the league next year.
12-Debate Schedule
Each team in the league will meet every other participating college in home and home contests, with a 12-debate Conference schedule thus resulting for each member. This schedule will begin each fall and close in April, with a championship trophy being presented to the league-leading team.
Frederick C. Packard, Jr. '20, associate professor of Public Speaking, opened yesterday's meeting with a welcoming address to the visiting delegates. Then, with Robert M. Beren '47, president of the Debate Council, presiding, the meeting held in the Foreign Students Lounge at Phillips Brooks House, drew up rules governing the selection of topics and naming of judges for Conference debates.
