Mme, Chiang, Welles Cannot Visit B-School

Two outstanding world figures in the persons of the Acting Secretary of State, Sumner Welles, and the charming first lady of China, Madame Chiang Kai-shek, were invited to visit the Business School this week. The telegraphic refusals are exemplary of polished diplomacy.

From the Chinese Embassy in Washington came this: MANY THANKS FOR YOU TELEGRAM. MADAME CHIANG GREATLY APPRECIATES YOUR KIND INVITATION, BUT AS HER ATTENDING PHYSICIANS URGENTLY ADVISE TO REDUCE PUBLIC APPEARANCES TO A MINIMUM DURING PERIOD OF CONVALESCENCE, SHE REGRETS VERY MUCH BEING UNABLE TO AVAIL HERSELF OF THE INVITATION. CHINESE EMBASSY."

And from the Department of State: GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR INVITATION. REGRET EXCEEDINGLY THAT PRIOR COMMITMENTS COVERING MY BRIEF STAY IN BOSTON MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO ACCEPT. SUMNER WELLES, ACTING SECRETARY OF STATE."

The Honorable Sumner Welles is scheduled to address the final dinner of the Inter-American Institute at the Hotel Statler this coming Monday, March 15.
