Varsity Nine Stands Second In League; Princeton Leads

Crimson Team Faces Cornell on Saturday

Roaring suddenly into high gear, the Varsity baseball nine has hoisted itself securely into second place in the League standings and is close to catching the first place Princeton squad.

With Columbia pitchers as a springboard last Saturday, the Crimson is set right behind the leaders, and has four batters in the top 10. In the pitching realm, Mort Waldstein stands as the sixth League hurler and Captain Lou Clay eighth. Waldstein's 21 strikeouts in 26 active innings comes only behind the 31 whiffs in 40 frames by Ted Harrison of Yale and the 23 in 35 innings of Princeton's Rey Talcott.

Meet Cornell Twice Saturday

This Saturday Cornell visits Soldiers Field for a doubleheader while the Tigers play host to Penn. Those four games, won by the "right" teams, could turn the tide of the 1942 campaign. Meanwhile, however, Princeton will take a swat at Columbia tomorrow. Although Cornell is on the bottom of the heap, she is 33 percentage points nearer the Crimson than Princeton is on the opposite end.

Sidelight of the current lineup is the leading positions of the Big Three. Princeton, Harvard, and Yale are sparking the race for the first time in years. If this week's contests break according to Hoyle, this may be more than a one week stand.

Among the individual batters, Clay is third with a 429 average. Ahead of him are only Princeton Captain Bill MacCoy with 550 and Cornell catcher Lee Turner with 444. Bart Harvey, who is right behind Clay with a 412 average, is in a five-way tie for the most runs scored.
