Twenty-three men from 14 far-flung states who entered College last year on National Scholarships and attained honors standing, have had their grants renewed for the three upper-class years, it was announced yesterday.

Although all stipends are adjusted to individual needs, the maximum which can be received in upper-class years is $200 greater than that which can be granted Freshmen, owing to the proportionally higher cost of living in the Houses. Twenty-four men in the Junior and Senior classes are now wholly or partially supported by the National Scholarship fund.

The question of whether high marks do not entail a sacrifice of extracurricular activities is left unsolved by the records of the 23 hand-picked "Conant men" who made honors last year. Nine of them took no part in any organized activity outside the classroom, but others made a good record. Seven were drawn into musical activities, and five became debaters. The HSU drew three to PBH's two.

Not Athletes

The men were definitely non-athletic, for although all presumably passed the three-hour-a-week requirement, only four of the 23 made a Freshman squad, two in football, one in track and one in crew.
