THE CRIME

Dartmouth College, an American institution of higher education at Hanover, New Hampshire, last week held its Twenty-Fourth Annual Winter Carnival. According to custom the festivities were presided over by the Queen of the Carnival. This royal lady was chosen in the following manner: A committee of three deans stands beside the gate to the golf course where the outdoor celebration is held. As a young lady who measures up to the standards of Dartmouth passes through the gate, the deans point at her and shout "There's one," whereupon the fortunate girl is spirited away to the Outing Club House where the final choice is made. When asked why there were three deans on the judging committee this year, E. Gordon Bill, dean of the Faculty of Dartmouth College, said "I think it is because of the rumors of graft in past years."

We wish to ask the Harvard students who attended the Carnival this year if they enjoyed the company of the following young ladies whose names appeared on the list of registered guests: Billy Burke, Ellnor Bean, Betty Button, Alice Fair, Florence Fine, Grace Frank, Dorothy Golly, Cynthia Jump, Georgia Ann Inksetter, Charity Mason, Elizabeth Pettibone, Marion Romp, Minnie Phift, Betsy Ross, Mary Power, Sophie Tucker, Phoebe Weed, Jean Spooner, Letta Turtie, Ima Smack, Mae Weston, Margaret Will, Mary Wood, and Helen Wont. There are 856 girls registered as guests at the Carnival--now wouldn't the statisticians have a good time laying them end to end!
