HOCKEY PLAYERS TO GET WORKOUT IN ARENA TODAY

FRESHMEN TO WAIT FOR NATURAL ICE IN CHARLESBANK RINK

At 2 o'clock this afternoon the University hockey squad will hold its first official workout on the Boston Arena ice. Conditioning work is pretty well over, and it is expected that the four coaches will watch today's practice with a view to cutting the large squad of 45 men down to a more workable size.

The candidates for this year's Crimson skating outfit have been divided into six teams, each with a substitute. The teams have been chosen roughly on the basis of previously shown form. They are purely tentative, however, and are not intended to be anything more than tentative.

Initial Session to be Long

Today's session will last two full hours, and will consist mainly of practice in shooting, with the possibility of skeleton scrimmage work between the defense and the forward lines.

E. L. Bigelow '21, coach of the hockey team, will be in charge of the practice in general, and for today's work at least, will be aided by three former Crimson stars, specialists in various phases of the ice game. Joshep Stubbs '20, will be in charge of the defense, and is expected to teach new men the groundwork of the famous Winsor system. Stubbs has played both for the Boston Athletic Association and the Boston Hockey Club teams, and is considered one of the best defense strategists in the game.

Two former Harvard net guardians will be on hand today to look over the large squad of candidates for the safety post. These are G. W. Canterbury '01, and J. I. Wylde '17, who stood in the Crimson cage for three years, from 1915 to 1917. Coach Bigelow will himself handle the forwards.

Practice in the Arena for tomorrow has not yet been definitely arranged for, but the team is sure to make the Boston pilgrimage again on Wednesday. If professional and club hockey leaves time for a short practice tomorrow, the squad will be given the ice by Manager George Brown of the Arena.

Unless the fee on the Charlesbank rink is unduly delayed, the Freshmen will wait for the natural surface before holding their initial work-out, and will not visit the Arena this week.
