TEAM A WORKS HARD IN LONG SCRIMMAGE

Scrimmaging Lasts all Afternoon in Final Fierce Work-Out Before Game with Holy Cross

A Freshman touchdown against Coach Fisher's B team was the outstanding event in an afternoon of scrimmages at Soldier Field yesterday. There was not a team on the field that did not see active service. Early in the afternoon the Freshman A team passed in through the Stadium gate as grist for Coach Fisher's University mill. Later in the afternoon Coach Knox's second team was called in. And outside the stadium, the remainder of the Freshman squad scrimmaged the dormitory teams. It was a busy day.

The afternoon started when the Freshman A team lined up on the 50-yard line for a 15 minute offensive drive against the University team A. The lineups of the two teams were as follows:

University team A; ends, Combs and Crosby; tackles, Evans and Dunker; guards, Grew and Hubbard; center, Greenough; quarterback, Lee; and backs, Howe, Cheek and Pfaffmann.

Freshman Team A; ends, Kilgore and Robinson; tackles, Daley and Porter; guards, Platt and Colby; center, Bond; quarterback, Hamlin; backs, Zarakov, Miller, and Upton.

Freshmen Gain on University

From the start the Freshmen put the University's defensive playing to the test. In two downs the Freshmen had advanced ten yards. Miller, of the yearling team than took the ball and in several rushed had pushed it to the University's 30-yard line. Then the University stiffened, the Freshmen passed, lost the ball, and play began in midfield again. Again the Freshmen started the ball on its way with a series of rushes. Then came a long pass to the ten yard line which a University man caught but then juggled it into the hands of a Freshman player.

Here, however, the University defense proved effective; the Freshmen lost the ball; and rushing from midfield began again.

Fisher Sends in Team B

With the advent of team B, the Freshmen took up the offense with renewed vigor. In three rushes a first-down had been gained. Two more netted the Freshmen five yards and then Miller, as a climax to his excellent work all afternoon ripped off tackle for a 35-yard run the ended beyond the team B goal. Zarakov kicked the goal. The team B lineup was ends, E. Bradford, Gordon; tackles, Theopold, R. Hubbard; guards, C. Bradford and Daniell; center, Kernan; quarterback, Spalding; backs, Maher, Samborski, and Cordingly.

Scrubs Relieve Freshmen

Soon after the scrubs were sent in to relieve the Freshmen, and in the ensuing scrimmage between the second team and team A and B, both sides used offensive and defensive formations. The playing was uneventful, marked only by fumbles and substitutions and an occasional touchdown by the University.

The condition of several of the members of the University squad was still causing apprehension and uncertainty yesterday afternoon. Several members of the squad appeared at practice in their street clothes. Among these were Eastman, Hobson, Hammond, Jenkins and Coburn. Although McGlone reported dressed for action his only work out consisted of easy signal practice and a little kicking. Whether or not he will play in the game on Saturday is still a matter for speculation.
