By capturing both places in the trials of both the singles and doubles in the intercollegiate tournament, the University tennis team achieved honors that are unique in the history of intercollegiate tennis competition. Several times a college has been a double winner, as for instance in 1913 and 1915, when the University players look first place in both events. But for a team to be not only winners but also runners-up in both events is something without parallel. In the singles G. C. Caner '17 was victorious, defeating J. S. Pfaffman '17, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in the final round. Caner had previously disposed of J. Weber of Yale, and Beekman of Princeton. Beekman had put Harte out, and was generally conceded a likely winner. Pfaffman had had easier going and moved into the finals without much opposition.

In the doubles Caner, paired with R. Harte '17, had defeated Beekman 'and Vandeventer, the Princeton stars, before reaching the last round. While Pfaffman and W. P. Whitehouse, 2d, '17, put out Weber and Stoddard, Yale's best, in their progress to the last match. The score of the final contest was 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, the winners having little difficulty in establishing their superiority. By their victories last week the University tennis team has won premanent possession of the silver challenge cup, presented in 1913 by H. K. Caner '89.

R. N. Williams '16 National Champion

In the national tournament at Forest Hills, L. I., N. Y., R. N. Williams '16, captain of last season's tennis team, came through a victor, deposing W. M. Johnston, the former champion, whose title Williams now holds. The final match between Johnston and Williams went five sets, 4-6, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
