Progress on the new buildings for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has proceeded at a fast rate, and a great deal has been done since the first pouring of concrete, which took place last April. In all of the buildings but the library, all the structural concrete has been poured, and the construction work is now up to the roof. This structural concrete is the skeleton of the buildings. It is poured in a semi-liquid state into wooden forms, and is reinforced by steel rods. The foundation walls, piers, interior columns and floors are all made of this material. Up to the present 27,000 cubic yards of concrete and 2,600 tons of steel reinforcing have been used. Including the library buildings, the 27,000 cubic yards is 73 per cent. of the whole amount of concrete which will be used.

Cream-colored limestone, from Bedford, Ind., has been selected for the outer skin of the buildings where these will be open to the public view, and also where they face the great court and two minor courts which are a striking feature of the architectural plan. In inter- ior courts and similar locations cream-colored brick will be used. Near the bases of the walls, some heavier stone is used, in accordance with architectural practice. This is called the base-course, and is being constructed out of pink granite from Townsend, Mass. About two-thirds of this is now in place or just ready for setting. One hundred and forty-two carloads of limestone, which material will be used in work around the roofs, has been received. Only about one-third of this amount will be required, but the builders will thus be able to select the best pieces. A million and a half common bricks used for backing, have been laid, and also 360,000 cream-colored face-brick. Most of the metal sash is on hand and will be set in the near future.
