22 CREWS HOLD PRACTICE

Large University and 1918 Squads Show Marked Development.--Regatta to Close Fall Season.

There remains but one week of a fall rowing season which has been most successful in every way. Twenty-two crews, the most ever on the river at one time, were on the river yesterday afternoon, including four University boats, ten Freshman crews and eight of the club shells. Coach Wray, assisted by Coaches McVicar '15, Brown, Haines and Manning supervised the work of the boats.

The season will end with a big regatta in the Charles River Basin, on Tuesday, and extending over two or three days, races being held between the University boats, the Freshman crews, and the club crews.

The two University boats are taking long paddles daily from opposite Stillman Infirmary to the Union boat club. The condition of the men and their oarsmanship have gradually improved. The two crews have exchanged boats, and Coxswain Kreger took Cameron's place in Crew B, Cameron going to Crew A. H. S. Middendorf has replaced Young at Number 6 in Crew B, and probably the men will remain in the following order for the rest of the season:

Crew A--Stroke, Harwood; 7, Ely; 6, Stebbins; 5, Schall; 4, Talcott; 3, Richardson; 2, Fuller; bow, Busk; cox., Cameron.

Crew B--Stroke, Brown; 7, Cabot; 6, H. S. Middendorf; 5, J. W. Middendorf; 4, Lund; 3, Meyer; 2, Culbert; bow, Murray; cox., Kreger.

Ten crews, all of which are taking daily spins on the river, have been formed out of the 95 Freshmen that reported for the fall season. Coach McVicar '15 is looking after the first crews from the dormitories and Coaches Abeles '13, Pirnie '15, Haines, and Manning are teaching the rudiments of rowing to those men who have had no previous experience. The benefit that these Freshmen have derived from fall work is obvious; many of the men who had never been in a boat before are showing up extremely well.

Coach Brown has divided his men and selected eight crews from the great amount of material that the club crews brought out. The races for the Filley Cup and the individual prizes promise to be closely contested.
