PORTRAIT OF DEAN BRIGGS

TO BE PRESENTED TO UNIVERSITY BY MEMBERS OF FIVE CLASSES.

A life-sized portrait of Dean Briggs is being painted by Edmund C. Tarbell, the eminent Boston artist. The portrait is a gift of the classes of 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, and 1915 to the University and will adorn the Living Room of the Union with the other portraits of famous Harvard men. The funds necessary to remunerate the artist for his services were subscribed entirely by members of the five classes mentioned and though a large sum of money was raised, it would not ordinarily be sufficient to pay the price for a work of this sort. The raising of an additional amount has been made unnecessary through the generosity of Mr. Tarbell, who in token of his esteem for Dean Briggs and his respect for the University has consented to undertake the work for the sum raised.

The portrait will be an oil-painting, full-length, representing Dean Briggs standing and clothed in academic gown. Several sittings have already been held and the work is progressing admirably. While it is difficult to determine just when the canvas will be finished, the committee in charge of the matter plans to present the portrait to the Union next June.

Artist Has Wide Reputation.

The University is extremely fortunate in the choice of Mr. Tarbell as the artist. He is considered one of the leading painters of America, belonging to the famous group called "The Ten American Painters." His paintings have taken high honors at the various national expositions, including the Paris Exposition of 1900 and the Chicago World's Fair Several of his paintings are on exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The credit for the carrying through of this worthy project belongs to F. Ayer '11, who was originally in charge of the work, and to a committee composed of E. T. E. Hunt '10, chairman, C. M. Storey '12, G. H. Roosevelt '13, Professor E. W. Forbes '95 and Professor I. N. Hollis b.'99.
