Middlesex Fours Defeated Freshmen

The Freshman and Middlesex four oared crews rowed two races over a half mile course on the Chaise River above the Stillman Infirmary yesterday afternoon. In the first race, between the Middlesex first and crews A and C of the Freshman squad, Middlesex took the lead at the start, though rowing a slightly lower stroke than either Freshman crew. Crew A soon dropped back, but crew C and Middlesex were never separated by open water. Middlesex finished in 2 minutes, 41 seconds, one-quarter of a length ahead of crew C, which was one and one-half lengths ahead of crew A.

The second race, between crew B and the Middlesex second four, was won by Middlesex second by one-quarter of a length. No time was taken. The two crews rowed side by side for half the course, when Middlesex slowly pulled ahead and at a point about 100 yards from the finish was half a length in the lead. Here the Freshmen spurted but were only able to gain one-quarter of a length before the finish line was reached.

Both races were marred by the poor steering of the Freshman coxswains.

The orders:

Freshman Crew A.--Stroke, Sargent; 3, Warren; 2, Chadwick; bow, Parker; cox., Rowne.
