At the first trial to choose the University debating teams to participate in a triangular debate with Yale and Princeton on March 21, held in Harvard Hall last evening, the following twenty men were retained: H. H. Breeland '12, E. R. Burke 2L., J. E. Cates '10, C. S. Collier '11, H. B. Ehrmann '12, J. deM. Ellis 2L., A. Glazer '11, T. M. Gregory '10, G. L. Harding '10, L. A. Headley 1G., L. S. Headley 1L., G. I. Lewis 2L., H. Potter '10, C. B. Randall '12, A. K. Reading 1L., W. F. Ryan '11, R. H. Smith '10, F. Stern '12, F. W. Sullivan '10, H. H. Warren 2L. The speeches were judged by S. Curtis '05, A. H. Elder '07, R. W. Kelso '04, and A. P. Stone '93.

Forty-six men spoke at the trials, each speaker being allowed five minutes to argue either side of the subject for the debate:-"Resolved, That the federal government should have power to impose an income tax not apportioned among the states according to population." The men who were retained will deliver ten-minute speeches on either side of the question at the second trial, which will be held in Harvard 5 tomorrow, and the number of competitors will then be reduced to twelve. The third trial will be held on Monday.
