Contrary to expectation, only a few Freshmen answered Captain Rand's second call for candidates for the Freshman nine yesterday. Nine new men handed in their names, but this makes the total number of candidates only 47. Last year the number of men who came out for the first call was larger than the whole number of men on the squad at present, while the year before that eighty men signed their names at the first enrollment.

One reason for the small number of men trying for the Freshman nine may be that many men are still with their crew squad and are prevented from playing baseball now but intend to appear later.

As a whole the material is showing up only fairly well even for this time of the year when good results are scarcely to be expected. No real hard work has been done yet, but in the course of a few days, the men will get down to the more severe work of base running and sliding. At present the practice consists merely of light drills, field work in the cage and starting. A short run usually terminates the day's work.
