The reduction made in the call for athletic subscriptions from undergraduates, has been one of the best features of the year. The 'varsity teams, by having their finances combined, are made self-supporting, and the only appeal for subscriptions comes now from the class teams. It would of course be desirable if an arrangement were made practicable, whereby not even the class teams had to rely partly on subscriptions; but, as that is out of the question this year, it only remains for us to discover what will maintain the teams in creditable fashion, and, once convinced that a certain sum is really needed, to contribute our individual shares without hesitation.

Of the class teams, the freshman are of course the most important and need the most money. The football team last fall left a debt outstanding of about one hundred and seventy-five dollars; this the nine and crew ought to pay besides their own expenses. Now the manager of the nine has decided not to ask for any subscriptions whatsoever, but to rely wholly on the receipts of games. The crew, therefore, is the only organization which will ask for support. Since the nine will leave the field of subscriptions wholly clear for the crew, the football debt ought, in justice, to be paid by the latter. If, then, this debt is added to the amount expended by the freshman crew last year, the total amount is found to be in the neighborhood of three thousand dollars. This whole amount must come from subscriptions, for not a cent is made at New London. Already, the class has responded with two thousand dollars, and we have no doubt that the other thousand will be forthcoming in time. We want, however, to point out the situation to Ninety-seven men and to ask them if they would not in the end prefer to have given the whole sum promptly and without seeming to begrudge it. The crew is not a bad one; careless at times, as most freshman crews are, and yet, on the whole, taking to its work in good shape. Since it deserves support, and is the only athletic organization to ask for it, we expect from Ninety-seven a handsome response. We hope this year to see no frantic appeals for more money at the last moment; it is an unpleasant sort of event and there does not seem to be any good reason now why it should occur.
