Appleton Chapel.

Dr. Phillips Brooks conducted the service at Appleton Chapel last night. He took as his text Mark ix: 23, "If thoucanst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth," and spoke on the nature of belief. He pointed out that the attitude toward Christ of the father of the child which had the dumb spirit is exactly our own. It is to Christ that the world turns for the solution of its troubles, and yet that solution has not come. It is because there is the same lack of complete faith which there was in the father when Christ addressed to him the words of the text. Faith is openness of heart and character. The man who has not this is solitary, he is not an integral part of the world; he may be in it, but not of it. The man who has it finds in all the forces of the world happiness, knowledge and power, and becomes himself a source of these. It is this alone which can keep clean the channels of communication between man and the forces of nature. We mean when we speak of belief in nature, in institutions, in art, an intimate sympathy, a perfect openness of relation, and a frank understanding. And the same is true when we speak of faith in God. It is only this which makes possible a true relationship between man and God. To the man of perfect faith God giveth all things.

The choir sang the anthems: Lift Up your Heads, by Hopkins; My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord, by Clave; and Smart's The Lord is My Shepherd.
