Appleton Chapel.

Dr. Lyman Abbott preached in Appleton Chapel last night for the first time this year. He first called the attention of those who have but recently joined the university to the fact that the ministers are at Wadsworth House every morning from 9 to 12. He further said that this was a most important part of the religions life at college, and that he was always glad to see those who were glad to see him, whether on secular or religions subjects.

Dr. Abbott took for his text the 13th and 16th verses of the 11th chapter of Hebrews. He spoke of the necessity of progress. Pagan countries are stereotyped, they are printed from stereotype plates cast two thousand years ago. The religion of the church, of the priests, of the ministers has not always been forward, but the religion of the Bible is forward. We should not look backward for our ideals but forward. The world is better today than it was yesterday, it will be better tomorrow that it was today if we do our duty. Don't be discouraged, we all make mistakes, the only man that doesn't make a mistake is the man that never attempts anything and his life is one long mistake. Creeds are of the utmost value out do not be bound by creeds of iron. They are like bands that encircle the growing tree. Either the tree will burst them or the growing wood will make it difficult for man to find them. So with iron creeds. They will be burst, or hidden until an ecclesiastical trial brings them to light Press forward to do better work than your fathers, and, to five better lives than your fathers did, to leave the world better than your fathers did.

The choir sang the following anthems:

Lift up Your Heads, Hopkins: The Pillars of the Earth, Tours; Near Me When I Call, King Hall.

Dr. Abbott will be at Wadsworth House Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, not today.
