The Season Opens.

HARVARD PLAYS HER FIRST BASE-BALL GAME.

On Saturday afternoon, the 9th, the 'Varsity nine opened the season of 1887 with a game with the Dartmouth nine on Jarvis field. Holmes field was not fully prepared, so that the game was played on the old field.

The day was bright but somewhat cool. Before the game was finished the 500 spectators were beginning to think longingly of their open fire-places, and some were bewailing their foolishness in leaving their overcoats in their rooms. Of these 500 spectators, about 350 watched the proceedings from the other side of the fence. It is a question whether it is advisable to charge fifty cents admission to the earlier and comparatively less important games.

The 'Varsity nine played only fairly well; and yet when it is remembered that many of the men this year are in a sense new men, and that they have been able, on account of the tardy spring, to play together and learn each other's ways during one short week only, one is inclined to think that the men are working in the right direction, and that they did as well as could be expected on Saturday. That they beat Dartmouth is sufficient criticism on their work.

The batting on the Harvard side was poor, and the number of bad fumbles and muffs in the field work was certainly unusual for a Harvard 'Varsity nine. The base running on the other hand was exceptionally good. Two slides at second, made by Wiestling, brought out rousing cheers from the stand.

Scruton made a fine home run, bringing in two men, and Wiestling knocked a red-hot grounder, which through errors in the field took him to second, and brought in three men. The score was as follows:
