We wish to speak thus early in the week of the importance of supporting the nine in the games with Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon and Saturday, in order that every man may realize how much depends on his individual support. The championship contest has now narrowed down to Yale in the lead, and Harvard second, with three games yet to play. It is absolutely necessary, if we propose to wrest the leading place from Yale, that both the games with Dartmouth should be won by our nine. In case Harvard does prove victorious, we have the chance of beating the Yale team a week from Saturday and tying with it for first place. Such a fortunate combination of circumstances as this would afford us an opportunity of winning a final game from our New Haven rivals, and so of gaining at length the much-coveted championship. We go over this matter briefly in order that the case may be clear to every one. Now, every student knows that with a good hearty backing the nine will play a far better game than if they merely receive the luck-warm applause of comparatively a few men. Nothing is more inspiring to a team than vigorous cheering from their friends, and nothing will better show our appreciation of the nine's work.

But in speaking thus at length on the subject of cheering, it is unnecessary to tell a Harvard audience that the uproarious scenes which have recently been enacted at New Haven, instead of being an honor to the nine, would be a disgrace to them and the college, and that unfair applause has never been met with by those opponents who have played us here in Cambridge. Harvard, if necessary, can bear defeat, but the college cannot bear that our visitors should feel that there was the slightest tinge of unfairness in their treatment. Let every man, then, give his heartiest support to the nine; and whether victory or defeat shall come to us in the next few weeks, we will have done all that is possible to gain the championship squarely and honorably from the college that has held it so long-Yale.
