One of the most encouraging signs of the present foot ball season is that enough good material was found among the candidates for the University eleven, to form a fairly strong second eleven. Now the chief function of this second, or supplementary eleven, is of course to give practice to the 'Varsity by playing against it daily. But the usefulness by no means ceases here, it is the school in which many of the men who are to bear our colors on the field next fall receive their training. Many a man, too, who fails to reach the standard of play necessary to secure a place on the University team is induced to keep in training in the hope of being chosen for the second team, with the prospect of ultimately working his way into the coveted position on the first eleven. Now, since this junior eleven plays such an important part in the preparation and formation of our foot ball teams, why would it not be a good plan for the men composing it to occasionally play against some of the neighboring colleges ?

Games with Williams, Tufts or the Institute of Technology could be easily enough arranged, and the benefits to be obtained from such practice are too obvious to require enumeration. If the 'Varsity team feels unable to grant leave of absence to the second eleven, for fear of losing practice by such a course, the outside games might easily be played on days when the first eleven is engaged in either its championship games, or in some of the secondary games which it is customary to play with minor colleges.
