M. de Lesseps, in an amusing speech at the distribution of prizes at the Lycee Henri IV. of Paris, declared that when he was examined for his Bachelor's degree the examiner took down a map and asked him to show where the north, south, east and west were. Neither he nor any of his comrades knew the cardinal points, for in those days geography was not taught.
