The Glee Club and Pierian Sodality gave their first benefit concert of the season in Sanders Theatre last evening, before a small but appreciative audience. The attendance was by no means a credit to the college, which seems ready to accept free concerts and other favors from the two societies in the spring, but to be loth to repay them at the only times when a chance is offered so to do. Very few freshmen were seen in the audience, although the concert had been placed at an earlier date this year, so as not to interfere with the freshman Christmas examinations. '86 is belying her good reputation.

The first number was Flotow's overture to "Stradella," which was successfully performed, with the exception of a noticeable weakness in the brass in the first part. Prof. Paine's "Commencement Hymn" was well rendered by the Glee Club. Mr. Dunham very successfully performed a piano solo by Liszt, receiving a hearty encore. Gade's "Winter Song," by the Glee Club quartette, was received with an encore. Mr. McCagg's solo, Schubert's "Impatience," was excellently given, and proved one of the finest features of the programme. The following-named college songs were then given by the Glee Club, and as usual were enthusiastically received: "The Festal Day," "The Midshipmite" (solo by Mr. Howe), "Get Away from that Window" (with yodeling accompaniment by Mr. Dorr), "O Where, O Where is My Leetle Dog Gone?" (Messrs. Lilienthal and Dorr), "Down by the River," the familiar "The Elephant Sat on a Railroad Track," with alternating solos.

In the second part, Mayerbeer's Coronation March from the "Prophet," was finely given by the Pierian, and was undoubtedly their most successful number. Owen Wister's beautiful "Spanish Drinking Song" was next given, the solo being sung by Mr. McCagg. Messrs. Frederick (violin), T. H. Cabot (cello). and Osborne (piano), gave an excellent and highly successful rendering of Schubert's Andante, op. 100; it was one of the most successful numbers on the programme. Mr. Lilienthal's interpretation of Osgood's exquisite song, "My Lady," fully matched the beauty of the song and was loudly encored. Hatton's "Good Night" was sung by the Glee Club, followed by college songs - "The Bull Dog," with exceedingly base variations by the bassos; "Rule Britannia," "Over the Hills," "Home by the Sea," and finally "Fair Harvard." The performance was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. Dancing at Memorial followed the concert.
