THE CREW.

ON Tuesday, March 27, the floats and gangways were put off from the boat-house, much to the convenience of the crews.

The club sixes have now all appeared on the river, and from the earnestness with which they work, it is safe to predict an exciting race next month.

On Saturday, March 24, the Varsity made their first trip for the season in a shell. The crew are too heavy for the boat - last year's Fearon eight, - but it is steadier than the Blakey eight, and the crew have kept it, up to the time of writing, although there is some likelihood of a change in a few days.

The following men, with a few occasional changes, have been rowing in the shell:-

A. Crocker, '79, Bow, weight, 150 1/2 lbs.

W. M. Le Moyne, '78, 2 " 160 "

B. J. Legate, '77, 3 " 172 "

N. M. Brigham, '79, 4 " 170 1/2 "

F. W. Smith, '79, 5 " 198 "

W. H. Schwartz, '79, 6 " 186 "

M. R. Jacobs, '79, 7 " 170 1/2 "

W. A. Bancroft, '78, Stroke, " 163 1/2 "

The total weight of the eight men is 1,371 pounds; the average 171 pounds. The weights are natural. Besides the above men F. J. Le Moyne, '77, and L. N. Littauer, '78, are among the number of candidates from which the crew will probably be selected.

The rows are usually four or five miles long, on which the crew is followed by the coach in another boat, and stopped often for instruction. Every few days a longer journey is taken to give the men a chance to get together. On Saturday last the row was to Watertown and back. The speed was fair, and the men kept the boat unusually steady for this time of the season.

All but Bow and Stroke fail on the catch, and the finish is slovenly throughout the boat. There is a tendency to overreach and not to sit up straight. Nos. 2 and 3 are especially faulty in this respect, both rowing with rounded backs.

For the past week 4 and 5 have exchanged places. This seems to have been an improvement No. 5 reaches out too much with his shoulders and fails especially on the catch. No. 7 also fails on the catch, uses his arms too soon, and clips. The shell is rowed quite steadily and the time is improving. To this improvement Brigham has contributed by changing from starboard to port.
